Zakat and Ushr are levied as ordered in the Holy Quran and Sunnah. These are not only taxes for the Muslims but are also acts of worship. Let us discuss them one by one.
Ushr:
Ushr means one-tenth. It is also an Islamic tax on agricultural produce. It is paid at the rate of 10% of the production in case a piece of land is irrigated by natural sources like rain, springs, streams, etc. However, the rate of Ushr is one-half, i.e. 5% of the entire production in case a piece of land is watered by artificial means of irrigation such as wells, buckets, tube well, etc. Nisab (minimum amount of agricultural produce) which is liable to Ushr is 948kg in weight. If the production is less than that, no Usher is chargeable.
